Authorities strengthen land and wildlife protection at Bogd Khaan Mountain

Authorities from the Bogd Khaan Mountain Biosphere Reserve have reported increasing challenges related to land use compliance, environmental protection, and wildlife conservation at the area.

According to E.Tsogbadral, Director of the Administration of the Bogd Khaan Mountain Strictly Protected Area, 1,964 individuals and legal entities have been granted permission to use approximately 2,600 hectares of land within the protected zone as of February 3. However, ensuring that these land users comply with environmental standards has proven to be an ongoing and complex task.

As part of efforts to enforce regulations on fencing and enclosure standards within the protected area, authorities have issued official notices to approximately 620 individuals and businesses, requiring them to meet established environmental and safety requirements. To date, non-compliant fences belonging to 43 individuals and entities have been dismantled.

Despite these enforcement measures, officials say significant obstacles remain. In several cases, land users have acknowledged receiving official notices but have failed to fulfill the required standards, creating further difficulties in maintaining ecological balance and ensuring public access and safety within the protected area.

Financial compliance has also emerged as a concern. According to information provided by the offices for land tax of Khan-Uul and Bayanzurkh districts, a number of individuals and companies operating within the area have accumulated substantial unpaid land fees. Over the past three years, these unpaid obligations have reached approximately 14 billion MNT, highlighting the need for stronger monitoring and accountability mechanisms.

Alongside land management issues, wildlife protection remains a critical responsibility for conservation authorities. Recently, rangers from the Bogd Khaan Mountain Strictly Protected Area, working in cooperation with officials from the Environmental Department of the Capital City, responded promptly after a wild deer wandered into a residential settlement zone. Through coordinated and swift action, the animal was safely guided back into a designated protected habitat without harm to residents or wildlife.

Environmental authorities are reminding citizens that encounters with wild animals should be handled cautiously. Residents are urged not to approach, chase, or attempt to drive away wild animals, and instead immediately report sightings to relevant environmental or wildlife protection organizations. Such cooperation plays a crucial role in preventing human-wildlife conflicts and preserving Mongolia’s natural biodiversity.

As urban expansion, recreational activity, and private land use continue to increase around Bogd Khaan Mountain, officials stress that maintaining strict adherence to environmental standards, tax obligations, and conservation regulations is essential. Strengthening cooperation between government agencies, land users, and the public will be key to safeguarding this significant ecological heritage site for future generations.
