Held under the patronage of the President of Mongolia, the Asian Taekwondo Championships, currently taking place in Ulaanbaatar City through May 26, has brought together 1,318 athletes from 43 countries competing in sparring, poomsae, and freestyle categories. Representing Mongolia, members of the national team are competing alongside some of Asia’s strongest taekwondo athletes in a tournament carrying significant Olympic qualification points.
Among the participants is the world-renowned Taekwondo Demonstration Team that earned the coveted “Golden Buzzer” on the television program America’s Got Talent, drawing additional international attention to the championship.
Earlier, Mongolia celebrated a bronze medal won by S.Yanjinlkham in the women’s poomsae division. Continuing that success, U.Gan-Erdene and U.Khand secured Mongolia’s second bronze medal in the mixed pairs poomsae event for competitors under the age of 50. In the same category, the team from South Korea claimed the gold medal, while Nepal earned the silver medal and Iraq took the bronze medal.
Meanwhile, in the freestyle performance category for athletes aged 17 and older, L.Badam advanced to the semifinals after scoring 7.620 points in the quarterfinal round. On the sidelines of the tournament, officials from the Mongolian National Olympic Committee met with Kim Sang-jin, President of the Asian Taekwondo Union, and Kim Joong-heon, Director of the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation. During the meeting, Mongolian representatives expressed gratitude for being granted the right to host a high-ranking continental championship that awards Olympic points and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding future cooperation.
The two sides also exchanged views on establishing a dedicated taekwondo training base in Mongolia and collaborating on the development of virtual taekwondo technologies and competitions.
