73 hazardous weather events recorded last year

According to last year’s climate review published by the Information and Research Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology and Environment of the National Agency Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring, Mongolia experienced 73 dangerous and catastrophic events across 10 categories in 2025. Of these, 61 were classified as hazardous events and 12 as disasters, resulting in an estimated 4.4 billion MNT in damages.

By comparison, in 2024, the country recorded 104 weather-related hazardous and catastrophic events across 15 types. Among them, 91 were hazardous events and 13 were disasters, which caused three fatalities and approximately 3.2 billion MNT in damages.

The report noted that meteorological events include strong winds, snow and dust storms, rain, wet snow, hail, cold rain, floods, landslides, sudden temperature drops, and lightning strikes. For instance, a dust storm is considered a hazardous event if visibility drops to 1,000 meters or less.

The review highlights the continued vulnerability of the country to extreme weather events and emphasizes the importance of monitoring, early warning systems, and preparedness to minimize damage and protect public safety.
