Violations of food safety law found around markets

An investigation by the Ulaanbaatar City Prosecutor’s Office has uncovered extensive breaches of Mongolia’s Law on Ensuring the Safety of the Food Products in and around the capital city’s largest trading areas, particularly “Narantuul” and “Bars” markets.

According to the study, a total of 245 violations under Subsection 6.15 of the Law on Infringement were recorded during the first eight months of this year. Many of these cases involved businesses engaged in food production and sales that failed to comply with legally required rules, regulations, and industry standards. Others concerned the manufacture, import, or sale of food products with incorrect or misleading labels, as well as noncompliance with technical regulations governing food production, trade, and service activities.

The report revealed that most of these infractions occurred in Bayanzurkh, Songinokhairkhan, and Bayangol districts. The sale of expired food and mislabeled products was found to be particularly common around Narantuul Market and the Bars Trade Center. Meanwhile, restaurants and catering businesses in Songinokhairkhan District were frequently cited for failing to meet health and safety standards.

Officials concluded that the root causes of these violations include the failure of individuals and businesses to fulfill their obligations under the Law on Food, inadequate responsibility among employees in charge of food safety, and weak internal oversight mechanisms. The Prosecutor’s Office stressed that stronger monitoring, better enforcement, and greater accountability are urgently needed to protect consumers and prevent unsafe food from reaching the public.
