Speed bumps reduce school-zone accidents

Since 2022, the Traffic Police Department, in partnership with Khaan Bank, has been implementing the nationwide “1000-0” campaign aimed at protecting children and reducing road accident risks. As part of this effort, speed bumps were recently installed near Schools No. 39 and No. 139 in Chingeltei District, areas identified as high-risk zones where drivers frequently exceed speed limits.

In addition to these safety measures, over 1,200 primary school students from the two schools received introductory lessons on road traffic rules, helping to raise awareness and instill safe practices from an early age.

According to the Traffic Police, during the four years of the campaign, speed bumps have been installed near a total of seven general education schools across Ulaanbaatar. As a result, road traffic accidents in the vicinity of these schools have dropped by 60 percent, marking a significant achievement in child safety.

Despite this progress, challenges remain. Statistics from last year show that 59 percent of children injured in road accidents nationwide were pedestrians, many of whom sustained serious injuries and, in some cases, lost their lives. Alarmingly, 72.2 percent of these accidents were recorded in Ulaanbaatar, underscoring the urgent need for continued preventive measures in the capital city.
