Wildlife friendly fencing standard to protect animals in green zones

As wild animals migrate, human activities such as leisure visits, harvesting nuts and fruits, or camping in forested areas have increasingly disrupted their natural habitats. Species such as roe deer and red deer often enter suburban camping areas, where they are chased by stray or domestic dogs, startled by passing vehicles, or forced to navigate fenced properties. In recent years, such encounters have led to animals becoming trapped, injured, or even dying in residential and commercial areas.

In response, the Environmental Department of the Capital City urges residents to avoid scaring or chasing wildlife, to refrain from loud noises, and to guide their domestic dogs on leashes to prevent conflicts.

Effective October 1, any individual or legal entity owning or managing land within Ulaanbaatar’s green belt or special protected areas must comply with the new city standard UCS03048:2025, titled General Requirements for Wildlife-friendly Fences in Camping and State Specially Protected Areas. This standard specifies the types of fences permitted and aims to reduce harm to migrating wildlife, regardless of property ownership type.

The department encourages citizens to upgrade their fences to wildlife-friendly designs, contributing to the protection of local ecosystems, supporting animal migration routes, and ensuring the safe coexistence of humans and wildlife in the urban environment.
