In preparation for the start of the new academic year, Ulaanbaatar City authorities have announced that an odd-even traffic regulation will be enforced across the capital city beginning on August 28 and continuing until September 20. Under the measure, vehicles will be allowed on the roads between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. depending on whether the last digit of their license plate is an odd or even number.

The decision follows a public survey conducted, in which 58 percent of respondents expressed support for the temporary restrictions. Unlike previous schemes that applied only to specific zones, this time the regulation will cover all six central districts of the capital city.

Officials have also clarified that the restriction will not apply on September 1, the official opening day of the new school year, to ease travel for students and parents. City authorities explained that the measure is aimed at reducing traffic congestion during one of the busiest periods of the year, when thousands of students and teachers return to schools and universities. They have urged drivers to cooperate with the temporary arrangement and plan their commutes accordingly.
