The fifth annual Mining Week & MinePro 2026 international mining forum and exhibition opened on September 16, with speeches from Prime Minister N.Uchral and Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources G.Damdinnyam.
Held under the theme “For Sustainable Development: Green Future, Global Partnership,” this year’s event tackles key issues in the mining sector, including policy, investment, exploration, processing, technological innovation, the green transition and international cooperation.
In his opening remarks, Minister G.Damdinnyam laid out the challenges facing the mining and mineral resources sector, walked through upcoming legal and regulatory reforms, and outlined the government’s future policy direction. He stressed the need for greater transparency and public access to information on the mining sector, noting that a lack of information has fueled public opposition and, in turn, dampened activity in exploration. He also reported that long-discussed amendments to the Minerals Law have now reached the stage of parliamentary approval, and said the changes would help improve the investment climate and operating environment for exploration companies.
The minister highlighted that Mongolia has, for the first time, compiled a list of critical minerals and will pursue a policy of domestic processing and value-added production, moving the country beyond simply extracting and exporting raw mineral resources.
He further announced that work is underway to revise the mineral resource royalty tax, currently in the double digits, with the aim of boosting the competitiveness of the copper sector, and stressed the importance of protecting investors’ legitimate interests and maintaining a stable, transparent investment climate.
The minister also said work is underway to urgently submit a draft Law on Petroleum to parliament, part of a broader push to modernize the legal framework governing the petroleum sector. Separately, a memorandum of cooperation was signed by the Unified Association of Geology, Mining and Mineral Resources Professionals, the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, and the Agency for Standardization and Metrology.
Prime Minister N.Uchral met business entities and mining companies participating in the event to review their operations, new technical and technological solutions, products, and production capacities.
The exhibition brings together enterprises working in mining extraction and processing, machinery and equipment, supply chains, digital technology, automation, and environmental solutions. Organizers say the event plays an important role in aligning state policy and legal reforms with the realities of enterprise operations and technological progress, while also identifying opportunities for future collaboration. The event runs through September 18, with conferences, meetings and exhibitions covering mining sector policy, investment, technology, production, the green transition and international cooperation.
