11,000 tonnes of salt to be stockpiled for winter

Ulaanbaatar City is preparing to stockpile 11,025 tonnes of salt and 9,736 tonnes of de-icing materials ahead of the 2026-2027 winter, with 60 to 80 percent of the planned supplies already secured. As part of preparations for the upcoming winter, 57.3 kilometres of external engineering utility networks are currently being upgraded and repaired across the capital, according to the Governor’s Office of the Capital City.

Of the total, 18.7 kilometres are main heating pipelines, while 16.1 kilometres are networks within residential areas. In addition, a new six-kilometre, 1,000-millimetre-diameter pipeline is being installed as part of the Tuul-1 wastewater collector. Household heating connections began on September 15. Meanwhile, repair, restoration and cleaning works on floodwater drainage channels, embankments, utility networks, drainage wells and pumping stations have been accelerated, with overall progress reaching 79 percent. Drainage infrastructure is also being improved at 16 locations along roads where water frequently accumulates. 17.6 kilometres of drainage pipes are being installed at these sites.

The National Agency Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring has warned that temperatures will begin falling across most parts of the country, with wet snow possible in some areas. In response to the expected colder weather, semi-coke and improved briquette fuel will be sold at 446 designated sales points across the capital during the heating season.
