Bagshiin Deed underground passage gets cultural makeover

The underground pedestrian passage at the Mongolian National University of Education, commonly known as Bagshiin Deed, has been transformed with colorful artworks and cultural motifs, giving one of Ulaanbaatar City’s busy public spaces a fresh new appearance while promoting Mongolia’s rich artistic and cultural heritage.

The walls of the passage have been decorated with traditional Mongolian paintings, Mongolian script and portraits of prominent Mongolian poets. The renovation also included repairs to the ceiling and electrical wiring, along with the installation of new lighting and security cameras to improve the overall environment and safety of the passage.

The makeover was carried out by a group of young volunteers who came together with the goal of adding color and character to Ulaanbaatar’s urban landscape. The project began on May 9, when the volunteers first washed and thoroughly cleaned the passage before beginning the renovation and decoration work.

Students E.Enkhjargal and B.Tuguldur, who created the wall paintings, said they wanted their artwork to convey the message, “Let us preserve our cultural heritage.” They also hoped to introduce people using the passage, particularly children, to the distinctive features of traditional Mongolian painting and encourage greater appreciation of the country’s cultural heritage.

The project has turned the previously plain passage into a more visually engaging public space, combining practical improvements with elements of traditional art. Organizers also sought to demonstrate how community participation and volunteer initiatives can contribute to improving the appearance of public spaces in the capital city.

After several months of work, the renovation was fully completed, giving the Bagshiin Deed underground passage a vibrant new look and bringing Mongolian art, literature and heritage into the daily lives of residents and pedestrians.
