Mongolia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva and other international organizations, Ambassador D.Gerelmaa, met with Anders B. Johnsson, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). The two sides reviewed the long-standing relationship and current level of cooperation between Mongolia and the IPU, and exchanged views on opportunities to further strengthen collaboration in promoting parliamentary democracy, human rights, gender equality, and greater political participation among young people.

During the meeting, Ambassador D.Gerelmaa briefed the IPU Secretary General on the World Women Parliamentarians’ Conference, which will be held in Ulaanbaatar on October 12-13, under the patronage of President U.Khurelsukh. She also formally delivered an invitation from S.Byambatsogt, Speaker of the Parliament of Mongolia, inviting the IPU Secretary General to attend the conference.

Ambassador D.Gerelmaa also provided information on the upcoming 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17), scheduled to take place in Ulaanbaatar from August 17-28 under the theme “Restore Our Land, Revive Our Hope.” She emphasized the importance of COP17 in bringing together international efforts to address desertification, land degradation, and drought, while highlighting the need to strengthen the participation and leadership of parliamentarians in tackling these global challenges.

Mongolia has been a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union since 1962 and has actively participated in its activities over the decades. In February 2026, O.Nominchimeg, Member of the Parliament of Mongolia, was elected President of the IPU Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians.
