President U.Khurelsukh visited the border in Khuvsgul Province and reviewed the progress of the ongoing joint field inspection conducted by Mongolia and Russia to verify and update their shared border.

The two countries previously carried out their first joint border inspection between 1987 and 2001, with the results later ratified by the Mongolian Parliament in 2002. During President U.Khurelsukh’s state visit to Russia in 2021, he and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to conduct a second joint inspection of the border and register the updated results with the United Nations. Following this agreement, the two governments established a joint commission the same year to oversee the border review process.

Under the framework of the commission, the two sides are working on updating border markers, clarifying boundary lines, examining changes in the courses and shorelines of rivers and lakes, determining the ownership of newly formed or disappeared islands, and restoring areas affected by forest clearing along the border. The overall progress of these activities has reached 85 percent.

During the president’s visit, Border Marker No. 350 at Mongol Shariin Davaa was newly installed as part of the modernization efforts. President U.Khurelsukh emphasized that the renewal and verification of the border is a historically significant undertaking that will contribute to establishing a clearly defined and internationally recognized national boundary free from disputes under international law.
