The language of chance and materiality comes alive

Acclaimed Mongolian Contemporary Artist D.Dorjderem presents his ninth solo exhibition, “Kharitsanguin Tokhiol”, at B Contemporary Art Gallery, opened on April 17. D.Dorjderem, who lives and works in Ulaanbaatar City, continues his long-standing exploration of materiality, chance, and perception. In this latest exhibition, he brings together both newly created works and pieces that have evolved over many years—what he describes as “unfinished” works, continuously shaped by time and transformation. Drawing on both organic and synthetic materials, the artist also engages with intangible elements such as coincidence, intuition, and temporality. Through this interplay, the artist reveals the subtle relationships and relative nature of material existence, inviting viewers to reconsider the boundaries between the physical and the immaterial.

A central theme of “Kharitsanguin Tokhiol” is the role of chance as a creative force. Since his first solo exhibition in 2006, D.Dorjderem has approached artistic creation not solely as an act of control, but as a collaboration between the artist and the inherent tendencies of materials themselves. Two decades later, this philosophy remains at the core of his practice. The exhibition demonstrates how he continues to respond sensitively to chance, observing and experimenting with the possibilities it presents. Ultimately, the meaning of “tokhiol” or occurrence itself becomes fluid, open to interpretation and shaped by each viewer’s perspective.

Before earning his Bachelor’s degree in painting from the School of Fine Arts in 2005, D.Dorjderem trained in traditional metalworking, an experience that continues to inform his material sensitivity. Over the years, he has developed a multidisciplinary practice encompassing sculpture, two-dimensional works, and installation, often blurring the boundaries between these forms. In some instances, physical objects become integral components of performative processes, continuously shifting in form and meaning.

His works are characterized by experimental inquiry and a spirit of exploration, reflecting on the relationship between humans and their environment, as well as the interplay between inner and outer worlds. Spiritual yet intellectually engaging, his artistic language conveys layered sensory and conceptual experiences.

The exhibition will continue to run until May 3, offering audiences a limited-time opportunity to experience the artist’s evolving body of work and his compelling exploration of chance, materiality, and perception.
