3 consecutive earthquakes strike Khovd Province

Three consecutive earthquakes measuring between 3.9 and 5.5 magnitude struck the territory of Zereg soum of Khovd Province on April 26, according to the Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences.

The first and strongest tremor, with a magnitude of 5.5, was recorded and its epicenter was located approximately 26 kilometers southeast of Zereg soum center and 28 kilometers northeast of Must. Just four minutes later, a second earthquake measuring 4.2 magnitude occurred. The third tremor had a magnitude of 3.9 and was located about 27 kilometers southeast of Zereg soum center and 38 kilometers west of Darvi. The seismic activity was strongly felt across 15 soums. Despite the intensity of the tremors, no damage or casualties have been reported.

Residents noted that the shaking was more pronounced on the upper floors of taller buildings, where light fixtures swayed and small furniture shifted. Earthquakes below magnitude three are generally not felt by people, whereas those exceeding magnitude seven can cause widespread destruction. It is also worth noting that earlier this month, on April 22, a 4.7-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the same province, indicating ongoing seismic activity in the region.
