N.Uchral nominated for PM

A pivotal moment in Mongolia’s political landscape unfolded as the Standing Committee on State Structure of the Parliament convened on March 27 to deliberate on the resignation of the prime minister. The session began at 19:44 with 53.1 percent attendance, meeting the quorum requirement and reflecting a moderate level of participation among members.

During the session, Prime Minister G.Zandanshatar formally submitted his request to step down, citing the urgency of overcoming political deadlock amid mounting economic challenges, including global price increases and fuel shortages. Stressing the need to prioritize national stability, he stated that his resignation was a necessary step to move the country forward.

Following discussion and questions from members of parliament, the Standing Committee voted on the proposal. A strong majority, 84.2 percent of those present, supported accepting his resignation. In accordance with the Constitution and relevant laws, G.Zandanshatar will continue to serve as acting Prime Minister until a new premier is appointed.

G.Zandanshatar, appointed on June 13, 2025, served 287 days, placing him among the shortest-serving prime ministers in Mongolia’s modern history. His tenure was marked by political instability, including a parliamentary vote to dismiss him in October 2025 that was later overturned by the Constitutional Court.

Meanwhile, political momentum has shifted to the ruling Mongolian People's Party (MPP), which is actively organizing its internal processes to nominate a new Prime Minister. On March 29, the third session of the MPP Congress officially opened at the Independence Palace, demonstrating a high level of organizational mobilization. The session was chaired by Ya.Sodbaatar, Head of the party’s General Secretariat, with U.Unurtsetseg serving as Deputy Chair. At the outset, Party Chairman and Speaker of Parliament N.Uchral introduced the leadership of the session and outlined its agenda.

The congress addressed three main issues such as nominating a candidate for prime minister, adopting a resolution to guide future actions, and discussing other organizational matters. Notably, the newly formed congress established following the party’s 31st congress consists of 597 members. MPP has also indicated that its chairman, N.Uchral, will be nominated for the post of PM. N.Uchral, who holds degrees in law, business administration, and history, represents a new generation of political leadership.
