Specialists urge regular eye checks to prevent vision loss

In observance of World Glaucoma Day, marked annually on March 12, specialists from the Second Central Hospital of Mongolia have issued a public advisory encouraging citizens to take preventive measures and undergo regular eye examinations.

According to medical professionals, glaucoma, which is commonly referred to as increased eye pressure, is a serious eye disease that damages the optic nerve and can lead to irreversible vision loss. Although the condition can affect people of all ages, it is most frequently diagnosed among middle-aged and older adults.

One of the greatest challenges in detecting glaucoma is that it often develops silently. During the early stages, patients typically experience no noticeable symptoms, allowing the disease to progress unnoticed. As the condition becomes more serious, however, individuals may begin to experience blurred vision, redness in the eyes, and the appearance of halo-like rings around sources of light. Other warning signs can include dark shadows, narrowing of the visual field, and gradual loss of peripheral vision.

Doctors also emphasize that certain groups face a higher risk of developing glaucoma. These include people living with diabetes, individuals with hypertension, and those who suffer from significant near-sightedness or far-sightedness. Genetic factors may also increase susceptibility to the disease.

Because glaucoma progresses slowly and chronically, many people may remain unaware that their eyesight is deteriorating until the damage becomes severe. In advanced cases, the disease can ultimately result in permanent blindness.

Health specialists therefore recommend that the public undergo comprehensive eye examinations at least once or twice a year. Regular screening, they stress, is the most effective way to detect glaucoma early and prevent irreversible vision loss.
