Unlawful transportation of Altai Snowcock under investigation

In January of this year, the Police Department uncovered a wildlife crime in Khovd Province involving the illegal transportation of the rare Altai snowcock, a bird species officially listed as endangered under Mongolian law and protected due to its ecological importance.

The Altai snowcock (Tetraogallus altaicus) is a large, ground-dwelling bird native to the rugged mountain ranges of western Mongolia, particularly the Altai region. Perfectly adapted to high-altitude environments, the species inhabits rocky slopes and alpine meadows, where it feeds on grasses, seeds, and small plants. Its camouflaged plumage allows it to blend seamlessly into mountainous terrain, offering natural protection against predators. However, despite its resilience in harsh climates, the species faces threats from illegal hunting, habitat disturbance, and environmental change. Because of its limited distribution and ecological sensitivity, it has been included in Mongolia’s official list of rare animals.

According to law enforcement authorities, a resident identified as B.T., who lives in Khovd Province, was found to have unlawfully transported the Altai snowcock. The species is included in Mongolia’s national list of rare animals, and any form of hunting, capturing, transporting, or trading of the bird without proper authorization constitutes a criminal offense. Upon detecting the violation, the police promptly initiated a formal investigation and opened a criminal case under Section 24.5 of the special part of the Criminal Code of Mongolia, which addresses illegal hunting, possession, and trafficking of rare wildlife species.

Following the completion of preliminary investigative procedures, the suspect was formally charged, and the case has been transferred to the prosecutor’s office with a recommendation to proceed to court for further legal action.

Under Government Resolution No. 260, adopted on July 5, 2023, the ecological and economic value of the Altai snowcock has been assessed at 217,000 MNT. In accordance with existing legal provisions requiring compensation for environmental damage at twice the established valuation, the offender has reimbursed the state in the amount determined by law.

The Environmental Police Department emphasized that protecting rare species is a shared responsibility and called on citizens to actively report any information regarding illegal hunting or wildlife trafficking. Members of the public can contact the Police at 102 or call the dedicated hotline 7019-1070 to provide tips confidentially.
