Authorities issue severe snowstorm warning

The National Agency Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring (NAMEM) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) issued a warning yesterday about heavy snowfall and blizzards expected across Mongolia in the coming days. The advisory states that starting at 6 p.m. on November 6, significant snowfall will hit the southwestern provinces, spreading tomorrow to most areas in the central, Gobi, and eastern regions, and by the day after, to the northeastern areas. These conditions are expected to reduce visibility, close roads and mountain passes, and create icy surfaces.

L.Oyunjargal, Head of the Early Warning Department at NAMEM, explained that from November 6, Bayan-Ulgii Province will see heavy snowfall, followed by eastern Arkhangai, Dundgovi, northern Bayan-Ulgii, Selenge, Darkhan-Uul, Khentii, and most soums of Tuv Province on November 7 and 8, reaching levels considered hazardous. In Govisumber, Umnugovi, Dornod, Dornogovi, and northern Sukhbaatar provinces, snow accumulations of five to nine mm are expected, while blizzards in Tuv, Khentii, and Dornod could produce 15 to 20 cm of snow, with even thicker layers in valleys and lowlands. These conditions may hinder livestock grazing, block roads and passes, and cause icing on power lines.

Moreover, NEMA urged residents, transport operators, and businesses to take preventive measures. Livestock should be grazed close to home, and people are advised not to herd animals over long distances, especially young animals. Children and people with disabilities should be kept under close supervision, and livestock pens should be secured nearby. Travel on long-distance roads should be avoided, and fuel and equipment should be maintained in ready condition. Authorities emphasized that following these precautions is essential to reduce risks from the approaching snowstorm.
