Relocation of unauthorized kiosks continues

Following directives from the city and district governors, Ulaanbaatar City initiated a campaign in April to remove unauthorized kiosks that obstruct public streets, squares, and pedestrian pathways, detracting from the city’s aesthetics and overall urban environment.

In August alone, authorities successfully relocated 1,278 kiosks across six central districts of the capital city, clearing roads and public areas, while also conducting thorough cleaning and sanitation of the spaces. Despite these efforts, some kiosks have been reinstalled without authorization, prompting city and district officials to implement a second round of relocations and tighten monitoring to prevent further violations.

The relocations also sparked controversy among certain business owners and residents who argued that removing the kiosks affected livelihoods and limited convenient access to daily goods and services. Authorities acknowledged these concerns, emphasizing that the campaign seeks to balance public safety, urban planning, and economic activity while ensuring the city remains clean and accessible.

Over the past month, enforcement teams have addressed unauthorized installations in five locations, including one in Bayanzurkh District, two in Bayangol District, and two in Songinokhairkhan District. These actions have restored access and order to public areas while reinforcing the city’s commitment to maintaining safe, clean, and visually appealing streets for residents and visitors alike.
