Veterinary sector capacity to be assessed

Members of parliament met with international veterinary experts to discuss ongoing efforts to modernize the country's veterinary sector in line with global standards.

B.Beisen, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Environment, Food and Agriculture, and M.Mandkhai, Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Food and Agriculture, hosted a meeting with a delegation led by Dr. Ruperto Victoriano Gongora. Dr. Gongora heads the expert team from the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) conducting a performance capacity assessment of Mongolia’s veterinary services.

In his opening remarks, Chairman B.Beisen welcomed the expert team, who are in Mongolia at the invitation of the General Department of Veterinary Medicine, and emphasized the parliament's commitment to strengthening the legal and regulatory framework for the livestock, food, agriculture, and light industry sectors. He highlighted that the veterinary sector has received heightened attention in recent years, particularly with the 2017 adoption of the Law on Animal Health and the subsequent establishment of the General Veterinary Department.

Dr. Gongora explained that the WOAH plays a leading role in setting international standards in animal health. He noted that the assessment aims to evaluate the capabilities of Mongolia’s veterinary sector, identifying its strengths and areas for improvement. He commended the 2017 legislation as a significant step forward and assured that preliminary findings and recommendations will soon be shared to support ongoing advancements.

Chairwoman M.Mandkhai added that the autumn session of parliament will consider proposed amendments to the Food Law, the Food Safety Law, and a new Primary Law on Agriculture. She urged the expert team to take a comprehensive and multi-dimensional approach in their assessment. M.Mandkhai also emphasized the importance of international collaboration, suggesting that beyond government funding, Mongolia should seek global partnerships, technology support, and capacity-building initiatives. She stressed the need to strengthen laboratory infrastructure and enhance human resources in the veterinary sector.

According to the Parliamentary Press Department, lawmakers expressed their intent to closely review and act on the expert recommendations as part of their broader agenda to elevate Mongolia’s veterinary and agricultural standards.
