Bubonic plague reported in Khuvsgul Province

Health officials have confirmed a person who was infected with the bubonic plague in Tsagaan-Uul soum of Khuvsgul Province, on September 3. The patient is currently being treated at the provincial General Hospital. Laboratory testing indicated that six close contacts of the patient initially tested positive, though none have shown symptoms of the disease. Authorities are conducting repeat PCR tests to confirm the findings.

On the same day, a second case of the bubonic plague was reported in Murun soum of Khuvsgul Province. Investigators determined that the patient had consumed marmot meat hunted in a plague-endemic area of Tsagaan-Uul soum’s fifth bag.

In response, the Provincial Emergency Commission convened its 15th meeting and decided to carry out disinfection and eradication measures to halt the spread of plague, while also instructing residents who have hunted or purchased marmots from affected regions to hand them over to professional agencies for safe disposal. Officials further noted that once the results of the repeat PCR tests for the six close contacts are finalized, the commission will reconvene to determine additional response measures.

Experts from the National Center for Zoonotic Diseases, the Provincial Health Department, and the General Hospital are working together to coordinate containment efforts and monitor the situation closely. The emergency commission has strongly urged citizens to avoid hunting, consuming, or trading marmots and to strictly follow public health guidelines in order to protect themselves and prevent further cases.
