Intangible traditional heritage to be celebrated in August

The fourth edition of the Festival of world culture “Nomad” is set to take place from August 21 to 24, at the foothills of Taij Khairkhan Mountain in Nalaikh District. This highly anticipated event seeks to showcase the rich cultural traditions of nomadic Mongolians to both national and international audiences, while also promoting cultural tourism, deepening collaboration among nations with nomadic heritage, and strengthening intercultural understanding.

The festival is being organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, Tourism and Youth and the Culture and Arts Authority, and was recently discussed at a coordination meeting where the Director of the Authority, E.Tsend-Ayush introduced the general concept and program plan. Participants shared ideas to ensure smooth organization and meaningful outcomes for all stakeholders involved.

Unlike previous editions, this year’s festival will be organized on an international scale in accordance with Mongolia’s Law on Protection of Cultural Heritage. It will focus on safeguarding intangible cultural heritage, recognizing and honoring tradition bearers, promoting their talent, and making the richness of this living legacy more visible to the public.

The festival will feature an academic gathering where researchers and scholars will explore the evolution and resilience of nomadic traditions. Cultural heritage experts will conduct assessments to evaluate the vitality of Mongolia’s intangible cultural heritage, with the active participation of scholars and tradition bearers. Visitors will be welcomed to cultural hubs set up by all 21 provinces and the capital city, each offering immersive experiences that reflect regional customs, crafts, and traditions.

To engage the public more broadly, a culinary street will highlight distinctive national and local cuisine, offering food made from ingredients grown on Mongolian soil. Visitors will also enjoy uniquely decorated rest areas inspired by nomadic aesthetics, complete with outdoor campgrounds designed for both comfort and authenticity. At the same time, artisans and creative entrepreneurs will showcase and sell their products at dedicated exhibitions and markets, supporting the growth of Mongolia’s cultural creative industries.

In addition, public exhibitions of multimedia art and live performances will present contemporary interpretations of nomadic themes, providing an artistic bridge between past and present. Through this multifaceted approach, the “Nomad” Festival promises not only to celebrate Mongolia’s nomadic identity, but also to build cultural bridges with the wider world.
