Wet snow and gusty winds to affect western and southern regions

Meteorologists forecast a varied weather pattern across Mongolia from May 19 to 22, with precipitation ranging from rain to wet snow in several regions, accompanied by gusty winds and fluctuating temperatures.

On May 19, rain and wet snow are expected over the Uvs Lake Basin, as well as in the mountainous areas of Arkhangai, Khuvsgul, and Khentii provinces. The following day, May 20, precipitation will shift toward the northern parts of the western provinces and some central provinces. By May 21, rain and wet snow will spread further, affecting the southern parts of the western provinces, the western and southern regions of central provinces, and the western parts of the Gobi provinces. On May 22, scattered precipitation will continue in some areas of the western and central provinces, with rainfall extending to the southern parts of the Gobi region.

Winds are expected to intensify during this period. On May 19, strong winds will blow over the Altai mountains, steppe, and plains, continuing with gusts in some areas on May 20. By May 21, wind speeds could reach 15 to 17 meters per second across the Gobi and steppe regions, causing dust storms.

Temperature forecasts indicate chilly nights in the mountainous and basin regions. Overnight lows in the Darkhadiin Khotgor, Altai, Khangai, Khentii, Khuvsgul mountains, the upper Zavkhan River, Khuvsgul’s Khurenbelchir area, and the valleys of the Ider, Tes, Tuul, and Terelj rivers will range between zero and five celsius. Daytime highs in these areas will reach 13 to 18 celsius.

In the Great Lakes Depression and the southwestern Gobi region, nighttime temperatures will be warmer, between 12 and 17 celsius, with daytime highs soaring to 28 to 33 celsius. The northern Gobi region will see nighttime temperatures from eight to 13 celsius and daytime temperatures ranging between 23 and 28 celsius. Other parts of the country will experience nighttime lows of three to eight celsius and daytime highs of 18 to 23 celsius.

Residents are advised to prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions, including wet snow and strong winds that may cause disruptions, especially in the western and southern parts of the country.
