UB takes action to prevent fires

As the frequency of forest and steppe fires continues to rise across Mongolia, authorities are taking decisive action to curb the growing threat. With climate change and human activity contributing to the increasing number of fire accidents, the government has launched a comprehensive initiative aimed at preventing wildfires and enhancing public awareness.

In order to prevent forest and wildfires, a joint task force comprising the Ulaanbaatar City Emergency Management Agency, the Police Agency, the Environmental Department of the Capital City, and the Traffic Police Department has been conducting mobile patrols in green zones since March 20. Their primary focus has been to deliver fire safety warnings to local businesses, organizations, individuals, and vehicles operating in the area. To date, they have reached 79 businesses, 4,019 individuals, and 539 vehicles, offering vital information on fire prevention, especially for those working in high-risk sectors such as forestry and agriculture.

The emergency management teams have also been collaborating with local authorities and emergency services to ensure the effective delivery of these warnings. As part of a larger effort to strengthen disaster response, the capital city is regularly organizing training and capacity-building workshops for emergency commissions at the soum, province, and district levels. These workshops are designed to prepare disaster protection teams, professional units, and volunteers, ensuring that the capital city is fully equipped to handle any emergencies that may arise.

In a broader effort to reduce fire risks, the National Emergency Management Agency has launched a nationwide campaign aimed at increasing public awareness of fire safety. Running from April 15 to May 15, the “Let’s Prevent, Let’s Protect” campaign encourages citizens to take proactive measures against forest and steppe fires. The campaign focuses on educating the public about the dangers of wildfires, providing critical information on fire prevention methods, and promoting a culture of safety and environmental protection.

This initiative underscores the government’s resolute dedication to both environmental protection and public safety. By focusing on proactive strategies and community readiness, it seeks to build a stronger, more resilient Mongolia, empowering its citizens to effectively face and recover from natural disasters, while promoting long-term sustainability and well-being for all.
