Local residents and transportation operators are warning motorists and tourists to avoid Khoridol Pass in Renchinlkhumbe soum of Khuvsgul Province, after heavy icing and slippery road conditions developed in the area. Snow and precipitation were recorded across Khuvsgul Province on the night of September 28-29, with particularly heavy wet snowfall in mountainous areas, including the Khoridol Saridag mountain range.
The following day brought calm and sunny weather, causing the snow at Khoridol Pass to melt and subsequently freeze. As a result, the road surface has become extremely icy and reportedly as slippery as glass. Travelers heading from Renchinlkhumbe soum toward Khoridol Pass have reportedly been taking a detour through Ulaan-Uul soum before continuing to Khatgal.
Road conditions between Khatgal and Khoridol are relatively clear, with little snow and no significant ice reported along parts of the route. However, heavy ice has formed on the far side of the pass, making the route particularly hazardous. Some drivers who attempted to take the shorter route in an effort to save time have shared their experiences as a warning to others, saying they put both their health and property at risk.
The Khoridol Saridag mountain range lies along a major route connecting key tourist destinations in Khuvsgul Province, meaning traffic continues throughout the year.
