Charcoal briquette fuel went on sale across Ulaanbaatar City on September 15 as the capital prepares for the 2026-2027 heating season, with designated sales points set to supply households with fuel throughout the winter.

A total of 500 briquette sales points are planned across the capital’s seven districts this winter. Of these, 446 will operate regularly, while the remaining 54 will be kept in reserve to ensure uninterrupted fuel distribution when necessary.

According to officials, 734 individuals submitted applications to sell fuel. Following the selection process, 446 applicants who met the required criteria signed tripartite agreements to operate sales points. The selection and verification process was carried out by a joint working group involving the air pollution control units of district administrations, khoroo representatives and Tavantolgoi Tulsh LLC. The applicants were inspected and verified on site based on proposals submitted by the district administrations and khoroos.

Ulaanbaatar, which experiences severe air pollution during the cold season, has relied on processed solid fuels as part of measures to reduce the use of raw coal for household heating. Ensuring sufficient fuel supplies and maintaining an accessible distribution network are therefore important preparations ahead of the winter season.

This winter, authorities plan to supply more than 300,000 tonnes of semi-coke and 80,000 tonnes of briquette fuel to households in the capital. In addition, approximately 40,000 tonnes of bagged middlings are expected to be supplied to businesses. As in previous years, the briquettes will be sold in 25-kilogram bags, with each bag priced at 3,750 MNT.
