Renewable energy share to gradually rise until 2050

The Energy Policy Council under the Minister of Energy reviewed the Energy Transition Strategy draft for 2026 through 2050 at its regular meeting, discussing long-term policy directions, investment priorities and key measures needed to transform the country’s energy sector.

The draft strategy outlines the nation’s pathway toward a more secure, sustainable and competitive energy system by addressing growing electricity demand, strengthening domestic energy production, expanding renewable energy capacity and reducing reliance on imported electricity. During the meeting, officials presented an overview of the current state of the energy sector, including rising energy consumption, challenges in heat supply, the need to modernize aging infrastructure and requirements for expanding renewable energy, energy storage systems, and electricity transmission and distribution networks.

The strategy proposes a gradual increase in the share of renewable energy in the installed capacity between 2030 and 2050, while significantly reducing electricity import dependence. It also sets targets for upgrading the national heating supply system and cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 39.1 percent compared with the baseline scenario.

According to the draft, the first stage of implementation from 2026 to 2030 will focus on accelerating renewable energy development, introducing large-scale battery energy storage projects, improving the legal environment, and implementing market reforms to support private investment and sector competitiveness.

In the following stages, it plans to further develop hydropower resources, explore hydrogen energy opportunities, consider nuclear energy development, expand regional energy cooperation, and pursue electricity trade and export projects.

Members of the Energy Policy Council exchanged views on the strategy’s objectives, implementation measures, investment needs and required legal reforms. They emphasized the importance of ensuring realistic implementation plans, effective financing mechanisms, and coordinated action among relevant institutions. Following the discussion, the Council decided to revise and further improve the draft by incorporating recommendations from relevant organizations before submitting it for the next stage of review.
