Men account for 72% of media sources

The Press Institute of Mongolia is implementing a project aimed at strengthening the sustainability of Mongolia’s media sector under the framework of UNESCO International Programme for the Development of Communication. As part of the initiative, researchers evaluated the sustainability of Mongolia’s media landscape using four key indicators and subsequently developed a set of findings and policy recommendations.

According to the assessment, positive-toned reporting currently dominates media content in Mongolia. Most of this coverage is related to government institutions, politics, economic affairs, and business activities. The study also revealed that media coverage remains heavily concentrated at the national level and in Ulaanbaatar City, while local issues continue to receive comparatively limited attention.

Although newspapers were found to provide the highest volume of reporting on provincial and rural matters, such coverage still accounted for less than 10 percent of total media content. From a geographical perspective, reports focusing on issues in provinces and soums represented only nine percent of newspaper coverage, four percent of online news content, and three percent of television reporting. The findings highlight the persistent imbalance between urban-centered reporting and the representation of local communities across Mongolia.

The study further examined diversity among news sources and found that gender imbalance remains a significant issue in Mongolian media. Approximately 72 percent of the sources cited by media organizations were male, meaning that seven out of every 10 interviewees or quoted individuals were men. Researchers emphasized that improving source diversity and increasing female representation in news reporting remain important challenges for the sector.

The full research report is expected to be published soon in both Mongolian and English, making the findings and recommendations accessible to a wider domestic and international audience.
