River water levels below long-term average

Water levels in Mongolia’s major rivers and waterways have continued to gradually decrease during the first 10 days of May, according to recent hydrological observations. Although melting snow and ice have occasionally increased water flow in certain rivers, most regions are still recording levels below their long-term averages.

Rivers originating from the Khuvsgul Mountains, including the Beltes, Bugsii, Delgermurun, Eg, Shishged, and Uur, have all shown a steady decline in water levels over the past 10 days. Compared to the same period last year and the long-term average, water levels in these rivers are currently five to 55 centimeters lower. However, the Delgermurun and Uur rivers are still carrying 20 to 55 centimeters more water than during the same period last year.

Meanwhile, rivers flowing from the Khentii Mountains, including the Kharaa, Selbe, Terelj, Tuul, and Yeruu, have dropped by five to 25 centimeters over the same period. These measurements are now 10 to 40 centimeters below the long-term average. The Orkhon River has shown relatively minor fluctuations in water level, though it too remains five to 35 centimeters lower than historical averages.

Specialists explained that the widespread decline in river levels is largely linked to reduced precipitation across many regions and intensified evaporation caused by climate change. Experts warn that prolonged low water levels could negatively affect ecosystems, pasture conditions, water supply, and agricultural activities if dry conditions continue throughout the warmer months.
