7th national conference on forest policy launches

Ulaanbaatar is hosting the seventh National Conference on “Forest Policy, Science and Technology in Mongolia” in observance of International Forest Day. The event brings together government officials, scientists, and international representatives to discuss sustainable forest management and the country’s green development goals.

During the opening ceremony, Minister of Environment and Climate Change B.Batbaatar, Charge d'Affaires of the Delegation of the European Union to Mongolia Christophe Forax, and Director of the Forestry Department B.Oyunsanaa highlighted the strategic importance of Mongolia’s forests, the need for science-based policy, and the value of international cooperation. Minister B.Batbaatar stated, “Forests are not only natural resources, but also strategically important ecosystems for mitigating climate change, protecting water resources, and preserving biodiversity. Implementing science-based policies for forest protection, restoration, and sustainable use is our top priority.” He also praised the President’s “Billion Trees” national movement for increasing forest cover, reducing degradation, and encouraging citizen participation.

The conference features 16 presentations covering topics such as Mongolia’s forest resources, policy trends, economic potential, plantations, afforestation and restoration, timber production, ecosystem services, climate change, biodiversity, and forest innovation and technology. Experts exchanged insights and recommendations on improving forest management and enhancing the economic and ecological benefits of forests.

Led by scientists from the Institute of Geography and Geoecology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, the conference aims to synthesize findings into policy recommendations and practical solutions. The event is considered a critical platform for promoting science-based approaches, strengthening forest protection, and supporting Mongolia’s broader green development objectives.
