Tsenkher River placed under local protection

The source of the Tsenkher River, which is historically recorded as Sengur Stream in the renowned Mongolian chronicle The Secret History of the Mongols, has officially been designated for local protection, authorities announced on March 18.

The decision was approved during the 10th session of the Citizens’ Representative Khural (local council) of Tsenkhermandal soum of Khentii Province. Under this resolution, a total area of 163,543 hectares, including the river’s headwaters and its surrounding watershed, will be placed under special protection and management.

Local officials emphasized that safeguarding the source of the river is critically important for preserving Mongolia’s freshwater reserves, preventing pollution, and reducing the risk of environmental degradation caused by human activity and climate-related pressures. The protection status is also expected to help maintain the area’s natural ecological balance and biodiversity.

Furthermore, the decision represents a practical step toward implementing national policies aimed at protecting river headwaters at the local level, demonstrating stronger cooperation between regional authorities and environmental agencies.

The Tsenkher River flows through the forest-steppe landscapes of Tsenkhermandal soum before joining the Kherlen River. The region is known for its scenic beauty, diverse wildlife, and abundant fish populations, making it one of Khentii Province’s emerging eco-tourism destinations.
