Wildfires damages near 6 billion MNT

As of 11:00 a.m. on July 2, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reports that efforts are ongoing to contain multiple wildfires in Selenge Province. Four fires—two in Khuder soum and two in Bayangol and Altanbulag soums—have been partially contained. However, active firefighting operations are still underway to extinguish four more fires in Khuder and Yeruu soums.

445 personnel are currently deployed to the fire zones, including 372 emergency responders from NEMA’s Firefighting Division led by Colonel Ts.Nyambayar, as well as 73 local professionals. The response involves 31 firefighting vehicles, 10 local vehicles, and one helicopter, highlighting the scale and urgency of the operation.

Since the beginning of 2025, Mongolia has recorded 149 wildfires across 65 soums in 12 provinces and three districts of the capital city, representing a sharp rise compared to the same period last year. Forest fires have increased by 77.1 percent, while steppe fires have grown by 16.9 percent, signaling a troubling trend as dry conditions and climate impacts persist.

Preliminary estimates indicate that these fires have destroyed approximately 663,317 hectares of land. Material losses include five houses, 49 gers, five vehicles, seven motorcycles, 125 livestock pens, 5,937 small livestock, 470 large livestock, 7,980 bales of hay, and 80 sacks of feed. The total estimated damage is around six billion MNT.
